Concerns about blood pressure are understandable. I for one battled high blood pressure for a time and now spend the majority of my time researching it as well as a variety of other health problems.
As a quick review, a reading of 140/90 is normally considered high. 120/80 to 139/89 is considered pre-hypertensive. The systolic pressure is the top number.
Why are these numbers that important? As we age, hypertension tends to be more prevalent. In fact, it is estimated that up to two thirds of the population over age 65 have high blood pressure. Some even believe the increase begins around age 50.
Left untreated, high blood pressure strains the heart which can eventually lead to stroke or heart attack.
Other organs can be affected as well such as the kidneys.
Isolated systolic high blood pressure typically describes a situation in which the systolic reading is measuring high where the diastolic may not be. The systolic reading measures the force of blood thorugh the arteries while the heart beats.
The diastolic reading actually tends to go down as we get older, so the systolic pressure is particularly important. Of course, both measurements are necessary to accurately diagnose high blood pressure.
To confirm whether or not you fall into the high blood pressure arena, you should have it checked (and probably re-checked by your doctor.)
Understand that one does not have to necessarily feel symptoms in order to have high blood pressure. It is known as the "silent killer" as many people do not feel particularly poorly yet suffer from the problem.
The fear of medication and the many side effects keeps many people from visiting the doctor even if hypertension is suspected. This is a fair concern and should be shared with your doctor.
Expressing this concern does not necessarily mean that medication still will not be prescribed or recommended. This is a key complaint regarding most Western doctors.
A number of doctors do not trust that improvements to ones lifestyle will take place (rightfully so in many cases) so medication becomes the "safe" answer to keep blood pressure under control.
My all natural High Blood Pressure Program has been tremendously successful in treating and curing high blood pressure (be is Isolated Systolic or otherwise high.) It is very relaxing and requires a small fraction of your time.
